A Brief Introduction of East China
Normal University
华东师范大学简介 East China Normal University (ECNU),
located in China’s biggest city Shanghai, was founded in 1951.
Over fifty years of development has shaped it into one of the
key institutions of higher learning under the direct auspices
of the Chinese Ministry of Education, influential both at home
and abroad. The University has 13 full-time schools, namely, the
School of Humanities, School of Educational Science, School of
Preschool Education and Special Education, School of Foreign Languages,
International College of Chinese Studies, Business School, School
of Law and Politics, School of Sports and Health, School of Science
and Engineering, School of Natural Resources and Environmental
Science, School of Life Science, School of Information Science
and Technology, and Vocation School.

These schools consist of 35 departments offering 55 undergraduate
programs, 6 of which, i.e. Chinese, History, Mathematics, Education,
Geography, Psychology and Teaching Chinese as Foreign Language,
are on the list of State Training and Research Bases for Liberal
Arts and Natural Sciences. Besides, the University has 4 state
key programs, 1 state key laboratory, 2 key laboratory under the
Ministry of Education, 1 open laboratory and 5 key research bases
for humanities and social sciences approved by the Ministry of
Education, and over 40 research institutes and a number of multi-disciplinary
research, experiment, computing and testing centers. The Graduate
School offers 73 doctoral programs, 118 Master programs and has
10 mobile post-doctoral research stations.

The International College
of Chinese Studies (ICCS)

ECNU is one of the first universities in China to accept foreign
resident students after the founding of People’s Republic of China.
Through decades of development, the International College of Chinese
Studies has gradually taken on its own characteristics whether in
teaching or in research. Some of our alumni have become well-known
experts and scholars in teaching Chinese as a foreign language in
China.

Almost all of our professors have the State qualification certificates
of teaching Chinese as a foreign language. They are well-educated

Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language is the best web in Chinese

The college stresses on training students to be teachers for
teaching Chinese as a foreign language. It offers 3 undergraduate
programs, 6 MA programs, and 3 doctoral programs. In 2002 web
evaluation of universities throughout China, the specialty of
Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language won the first place in
its specialty.

The college emphasizes the parallel development of teaching and
research. We now have many research results in methodology of

and Chinese folklore.

Student who completes the required courses and passes all the examinations
and defense of his /her thesis can receive the following certificates

of completion of MED class by University
of Pennsylvania, d) all the course credits a student earns can
help him/her to obtain teaching certificate in the State of Pennsylvania.

Admissions

American elementary and high school teachers of Chinese language
and culture, graduates with BA degree of Chinese or relevant disciplines,
and teachers of Chinese in the United States with Chinese BA degree,
or potential teachers of Chinese in the States.
美国在职中小学中国语言和文化教师,有中文和相关学科的学士学位者,在美国的有中国学士学位的中文教师,或美国将可能从事中文教学者。

Length of Study
学习时限
The length for the MED degree study is 16 months in four semesters.
The first semester is from June to August, the second September
to December, the third January to May the following year, and the
fourth June to August. The teaching activities for the first semesters
is conducted in China, the second and third semesters in the States.
For the fourth semester student can choose to stay either in China
or the States according to his/her need to complete the thesis.
However, those who choose to stay in the States must come to ECNU
to fulfill the course of teaching practice one month before the
end of the program. In 2004, due to the enrollment process, the
first semester will be postponed to start in September and the whole
program will end in December 2005. The graduation ceremony will
be held in ECNU in the fourth semester. Degree certificates will
be issued according to the degree regulations of People’s Republic
of China.
此学位课程班学习时间为16个月,分为四个学期。第一学期从6月至8月,第二学期9月至12月,第三学期次年2月至5月,第四学期6月至8月。第一学期的教学活动在华东师范大学举行,二、三学期在宾夕法尼亚大学举行,第四学期学生可根据撰写论文需要选择在中国和美国完成,但选择在美国的需在项目结束前一个月到中国完成教学实习课程。今年的项目由于情况特殊,改为9月开始,明年12月结束。毕业典礼在华东师范大学举行。学位证书的颁发将按中华人民共和国学位条例执行。

This course provides an introduction to some typical definitions
of curriculum and different schools of curriculum theories. Students
will learn the basic principles of curriculum targets, curriculum
standards, teaching materials, curriculum types and curriculum
evaluation, etc. The course will deal in detail the relations
between teaching aim and curriculum evaluation, etc. The course
will deal in detail the relations between teaching aim and curriculum
design, between teaching program and teaching syllabus, between
comprehensive courses and core courses, etc. Based on a systematic
analysis of teaching process, students will master concrete methods
of curriculum design and curriculum evaluation and meet the changing
trends in curriculum reform.
本课程介绍几种典型的课程定义和课程理论流派;全面概述对外汉语课程设计的基本原则和主要内容(课程目标、课程内容—课程标准与教材、课程类型、课程实施和课程评价);详细论述教学目的与课程设计的关系、教学计划与教学大纲的区别、综合课程与核心课程的关系等等。在系统分析教学过程的基础上,掌握课程设计和课程评价(包括学业评价、测量等)的具体方法,并能适应课程变革的趋势。
CFL Language Acquisition 汉语作为第二语言的习得理论

This course provides a basic understanding of second language
acquisition, theory and practice in first and second language
acquisition, similarities and differences between first and second
language acquisition. It explains theories of interlanguage and
error analysis, explores the ways and ability of second language
acquisition, especially the acquisition of Chinese as a Foreign
Language. It will provide a penetrative analysis on inner and
outer factors in CFL,, including difference of individuals, environment,
and so on.
本课程在明确第二语言习得的定义、了解第一语言的习得理论和过程、第二语言的习得理论和过程的基础上,分析比较二者的共同点和相异性。论述中介语和偏误分析理论、阐述二语习得途径、探讨第二语言能力和汉语作为第二语言的习得过程,对汉语作为二语学习的内外因素—学习者个体差异与二语习得的关系、二语学习环境(课堂教学对二语习得的影响、与二语习得相关的外在因素)等进行深入分析,并在此基础上掌握汉语作为二语习得的基本理论,用以知道教学实践。
Chinese Phonology for Language Teachers汉语语音及其教学
Course Units: 1CU /2 credits/30 hours学分:2;课时:40
This course aims at the students’ standard of understanding and
teaching Chinese phonology. It provides a systematic theory of
the phonology of Mandarin Chinese (Putonghua), including vowels,
consonants, initials, finals, tones, syllabic structures, sandhi,
prosodic phonetics. It focuses on the combination of theoretical
knowledge with practical ability in phonology and its teaching.
It will also apply a comparative method between Chinese and English
phonologies to suit the special needs of the U.S. students.
本课程的教学目标是提高学生对汉语音系的认识述评以及汉语语音的教学能力。主要教授汉语普通话(标准语)的音系,包括元音、辅音、声母、韵母、声调、音节结构、音变、节律的语音学(phonetic)和音系学(phonological)知识。在讲授的过程中,注重理论知识与语音实践能力、教学实践能力相结合,并根据教学对象的特点运用汉、英音系对比的方法和对美国学习者主要语音偏误进行分析的方法,突出汉语音系及其教学的特点。
Chinese Characters: Their Structure and Evolution 汉字的结构及其演变
Course Units: 1 CU /3 credits/30 hours 学分:3;课时:40
This course provides an introduction to the origins, evolution
and principles of Chinese characters for language teachers. Students
will study the protoforms of the frequently-used characters, the
graphic-semantic relations, and the process of segmentation into
strokes, as well as the basic principles governing the composition
of Chinese characters. The focus of the course is on the graphemes,
the nucleus of Chinese writing system, and their functions in
the composition of characters. This course will assist students
to classify characters into hundreds of groups interrelated phonetically
or semantically in terms of graphemes, and to develop instructional
methods to facilitate the acquisition of Chinese characters.
本课程介绍汉字的起源、演变与汉字构造的基本原则,分析常用汉字的初文及其演变、形义关系、汉字的隶化笔画的过程、汉字结构的根本原理等。课程的重点是分析汉字结构的核心—形位,及其在汉字组织中的意义。课程将帮助学生将汉字分析成几百个以音或义相联系的形位,从而提高汉字辨析和教学能力。
Chinese Grammar and Teaching 汉语语法及其教学
Course Units: 1 CU /3credits/30 hours学分:3;课时:40
This course provides with a basic knowledge of Chinese grammatical
structure as required in the “Teaching Syllabus for the Undergraduate
Program of Chinese as a Foreign Language” issued by National Office
of TCFL of China, which includes: morphemes and their classification,
word classes, phrases, sentences (simple, complex and peculiar);
sentence groups; aspects of verbs, degrees of comparisons of adjectives,
etc. It also provides a comparatively systematic knowledge about
Chinese linguistic theory.
通过本课程教学,使学生初步掌握并能熟练运用国家汉办颁布的《高等学校外国留学生汉语言专业教学大纲》中现代汉语语法部分内容,主要有:语素及其分类;词类;短语;句子(单句、复句、特殊句式);句群及其分类;动词的态;形容词的级等。并使学生具备较为系统完整的汉语言理论知识结构。
A Comparative Study between Chinese and English and Translation

This course provides a systematic introduction of comparative
study between Chinese and English, and the translation from English
to Chinese and vice versa. It will help students to understand
better the differences between the two languages and to do better

Chinese Society Today 当代中国社会

This course provides an in-depth analysis of contemporary China’s
society in about 15-20 aspects, such as politics, economy, culture,
arts, and so on, so that students can understand better the contemporary
China.
本课程分十五个方面比较深入地分析了当代中国社会的现状,包括政治、经济、文化、艺术等等,使学生对当代中国有一个比较全面的了解。
Chinese History 中国历史

This course provides a brief account of the long history of China
from pre-historic culture, Xia and Shang dynasties, up to Opium
War and the founding of People’s Republic of China. It will introduce
and comment a series of significant historic events in China’s
history and persons who have exerted tremendous impacts in the
evolution of China. It will help the students to have a general
picture of Chinese history and a comprehensive understanding of
the social change of China.
讲授中国的史前文化、从夏商明清、从鸦片战争到新中国成立的悠久历史,介绍与评述中国历史上的重大事件及影响中国历史进程的重要人物,使学生了解中国历史的发展概况,对中国的社会变迁有较全面的认识。
Chinese Literature 中国文学
Course Units: 1CU /3 credits/30 hours 学分:3; 课时:40
This course provides a chronological knowledge of Chinese literature
from ancient to modern, especially the contemporary times. The
focus of the course is on the important literary schools in history,
classical writers and their works. A combined method of lectures,
classroom discussions, and movie/video entertainment will help
the students to form a general picture of the development of Chinese
literature, raise their ability to understand Chinese literary
works and makes it part of knowledge as language teachers.
本课程以时代为序,着重介绍中国古代特别现当代文学史上重要的文学流派、经典作家及其主要代表作品。采用课堂讲授、小组讨论和主题发言相结合的方式,并结合相关影视作品,力求使学生了解中国文学发展的基本线索,提高对中国文学作品的阅读理解能力,增强作为汉语教师必备的文学修养。
Chinese Culture 中国文化
Course Units: 1CU /3 credits/30 hours学分:3;课时:40
This course provides a comprehensive picture of Chinese (the Hans
in particular) culture based on the modern concepts of cultural
anthropology, philosophical anthropology, and folklore. It will
be dealt in three aspects: material culture including manufacturing,
building, costumes, cuisine, hygiene; institutional culture including
ritual and ceremony, family construction, village community, etc.;
and spiritual culture including beliefs, religion, Confucianism,
other philosophic schools, metropolitan fashions, etc. It will
also introduce the communication between Chinese and Western cultures,
and look forward to the future of Chinese culture.
本课程将围绕这一宗旨:运用当代文化人类学、哲学人类学和民俗学的学科新理念,以人为本,扼要缕析自古至今,中国人为营生而发的物质文化;与人相处的制度文化;人心慰藉的精神文化。每类文化又将分不同层面加以描述、归纳和解析。如物质文化;拟分稻作等物质生产文化、建筑文化、服饰文化、饮食文化、养生文化;制度文化;拟分人生礼仪文化、家族文化、村落社区文化;精神文化:拟分神仙信仰、宗教文化、儒家文化、诸子思想。都市时尚等。另外,拟就中国文化向外的传播和外来文化在中国的受容、中国文化的未来也作专题的讲授。力求在传统和现代,上层与下层,中国与外国之间勾勒出真实的中国文化图象轨迹。
Chinese Arts 中国艺术

This course provides a brief introduction of traditional Chinese
arts, their developing process, national features and esthetic
aspiration. Its focus will be on the introduction and appreciation
of brilliant artists in Chinese history and their representative
works. The students will learn of the basic features and achievements
of Chinese calligraphy, painting, music, dance, sculpture, gardening,
arts and crafts, and fostering an ability to appreciate them.
概括讲授中国传统艺术的发展历程、民族特色和美学追求,介绍与评析中国历史上具有杰出成就的艺术家及其代表作,使学生了解中国书法、绘画、音乐、舞蹈、雕塑、园林建筑、工艺美术等艺术种类的基本特征及其成就,培养学生鉴赏中国艺术的能力。
Field Work: Class Observation and Teaching Practice 课堂观摩和教学实习
Course Units: 1CU / 2 credits/30 hours学分:2;课时:40
This course begins with an overview of the field of CSL teaching
material. It covers materials analysis, assessment, adaptation
and modification. Readings and class assignments and activities
will provide opportunities for students to explore their own teaching
plan. The class observations of teaching Chinese as first language
in primary and middle school (out-campus) and teaching Chinese
as a second language/for foreigners (in-campus) are offered. This
course will also provide opportunities for students to practice
teaching under the guide of supervisor.
本课程分为两个阶段:第一阶段主要是汉语作为第二语言(CSL)的教材研究与教材教法讨论,主要涉及教材的分析与评估、教材的编写与选用以及教案设计等。第二阶段主要是教学观摩与实习。学生去中小城市学观摩语文课(汉语作为第一语言)教学,在本校旁听对外汉语教学(汉语作为第二语言)的各种课型并进行课堂讨论。在此基础上,结合实践设计出自己的教案,并在教师的指导下进行教学实践。
Adolescent Development青少年发展

The course of “Adolescent development” mainly describes characteristics
of adolescents’ physical and mental development and related issues
for the critical adolescence stage in the process of human growing.
The course includes the chief viewpoints and theories on the development
of adolescents, the main methods to research adolescents’ psychological
development, adolescents’ physical growth and concomitant psychological
feeling, the characteristics of adolescents’ cognitive development,
intellectual development, emotional development, personality development,
social cognition and social development, factors from families,
peers, media and schools that affect adolescents’ psychological
development, the common psychological and behavior problems usually
found in adolescents and some related intervening strategies,
and the development characteristics of adolescents in the different
background of culture and value (especially in the Chinese culture
background ) and etc..
“青少年发展”课程主要介绍与论述人类成长里程中极为重要的青少年阶段的身心发展特点及相关问题。探讨的问题包括:青少年成长与发展的主要理论观点,青少年心理发展的主要研究方法,青少年的生理发育及与此相伴的心理感受,青少年的认知发展、智力发展、情绪发展、个性发展、社会认知和社会性发展的特征,影响青少年心理发展的家庭、同伴、媒体、学校因素,青少年常见的心理与行为问题及其干预对策,以及不同文化与价值观背景(尤其是中国的文化背景)下的青少年发展特点等。

The professors
Prof. Pan Wenguo 潘文国教授
The tenure professor of East China Normal University and the executive
dean of International College for Chinese Studies and director
of the Institute of Applied Linguistics. Deputy Chairman of China
Association of Comparative Study between English and Chinese and
head of the Contrastive Linguistics Branch. Mentor of doctorate
students for the theoretical linguistics and Chinese linguistics.
He is an expert of theoretical linguistics, contrastive linguistics,
translation theory and practice, ancient Chinese and modern Chinese.
