| Translation Studies in
the Future: Toward a Multinational and Multitheoretical Discipline |

| Short biographical information: |
| Edwin Gentzler is a Professor of Translation Studies and Director of the Translation Center at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. He is the author of Contemporary Translation Theories (London: Routledge, 1993), which has recently been issued in a second, revised version (Clevedon: Multilingual Matters, 2001) and has been translated into Italian, Bulgarian, and Persian. Arabic and Chinese versions are forthcoming. He is the co-editor (with Maria Tymoczko) of the Translation and Power (Amherst: University of Massachusetts Press, 2002). He serves as co-editor (with Susan Bassnett) of the Topics in Translation Series for Multilingual Matters. He received his PhD in Comparative Literature from Vanderbilt University in 1990 and taught at Utrecht University in Holland and Warwick University in the United Kingdom before coming to the University of Massachusetts Amherst. |
| Abstract |
| In this paper, I summarize the state of the
discipline of translation studies in several parts of the world, including
Europe, the United States, and China, suggesting ways for multinational
collaboration; and (2) discuss several interdisciplinary theories relevant
to translation studies, suggesting multitheoretical connections that might
further inform the field of translation studies and open avenues for further
research. Theories discussed include a variety of contemporary cultural
studies approaches, including poststructural, postmodern, psychological,
and anthropological. I illustrate my talk with examples drawn from my
latest work on New Translation Theories in the Americas, including examples
theorizing translation phenomena in the United States and Canada. |
